We Go Back to the Future on an Interview with Joey Resendez

Spenser Liszt (SL) talks with our very own Joey Resendez (JR) about the saxophone, the upcoming Lone Star Wind Orchestra concert, and his most memorable LSWO experiences.

SL: Where are you from and how long have you been playing saxophone?

JR: Like most, I started playing saxophone in the 6th grade. So, 26 years. Saxophone was my first choice followed by trumpet and tuba. I remember taking some sort of hearing test where they play two pitches and you have to tell if the second one is higher or lower. They said I could pick whatever I wanted, so saxophone it was.

SL: How long have you been a member of LSWO?

JR: I joined the group in the fall of 2010 when a vacancy came open. Every year has gotten better and better!

SL: What is your most memorable experience with LSWO?

JR: Playing at the Midwest and WASBE conferences in Chicago and San Jose will always stick with me as well as being a guest soloist with the Lone Star Youth Winds. However, I think the best part of the whole experience is all of the friends I have made being a part of this wonderful ensemble.

SL: What is exciting about the upcoming sax quartet feature?

JR: There is not an abundance of compositions that feature the saxophone quartet, so the fact that we are even playing one is exciting. Also, the fact that Spacious Skies is such a new piece (I believe we are just the second ensemble to perform it) is special. And to share the stage with three other great saxophonists, and a world class ensemble and conductor… what more could I ask for?

SL: What do you do outside of LSWO?

JR: I work in the music retail business selling band and orchestra instruments and accessories. I am also the saxophonist “on call” for some orchestras in Texas and Louisiana. I also maintain a small studio of private saxophone students.

SL: Tell us more about you! (hobbies, family, etc.)

JR: My lovely wife of 11 years, Jennifer, is the head choral director at Mesquite High School. I have two beautiful children: Ryan (6) and Rosalyn (3). We enjoy going to the zoo, bowling, and playing games/watching movies at home. We are also very active in our church (First Baptist Garland). I am a lifelong fan of the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Join Joey Resendez and the LSWO Saxophone Quartet on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at Moody Performance Hall. Music Director Eugene Migliaro Corporon and the Lone Star Wind Orchestra perform music by Bruce Broughton, Frank Ticheli, and Cindy McTee, among others.
