In 2014, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra created a fund for scholarships. In 2015, in collaboration with Jack Stewart’s parents, Ann and Pat Stewart, the LSWO fund was officially changed to the Jack Stewart Music Changing Lives Scholarship Fund as a lasting tribute to Jack.
John Patrick “Jack” Stewart, clarinetist, was the 2011 inaugural winner of the first annual Lone Star Youth Winds (LSYW) concerto competition and performed with LSYW for two years before leaving for college. Jack continued his musical accomplishments at Baylor University until an auto accident caused his passing in July, 2014. The Jack Stewart Music Changing Lives Scholarship Fund honors his endearing love of music, dedication, talent and artistry; is a tribute to his selflessness; and pays homage to his compassion for others and the assistance he so eagerly provided to countless people throughout his short life.
The Jack Stewart Music Changing Lives Scholarship Fund provides funding for annual scholarships including the Jack Stewart Memorial Scholarship. Ann and Pat Stewart will be heavily involved in the scholarship application review process and will choose the Jack Stewart Memorial Scholarship recipient each year from the pool of qualified applicants.
Making a difference in the community and changing young people’s lives in a positive way through music is a dream the Lone Star Wind Orchestra founders hoped would come to fruition when they started the organization in 2006. The LSWO has remained true to the dream by providing educational scholarships, performance-based tuition assistance, and monetary awards to concerto competition finalists.
Now we continue our success and stretch our goal as we strive to grow the Jack Stewart Music Changing Lives Scholarship Fund to support our scholarship program. Annual competitive scholarships are awarded to:
- Graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education
- Lone Star Youth Winds concerto competition finalists
- Students needing tuition assistance to participate in Lone Star Youth Winds
Students competing for higher education Music Changing Lives scholarships complete an essay titled “How Music Changed My Life”, submit multiple letters of reference, exhibit strong leadership skills, and provide exceptional volunteer service in their community.
Since 2008, LSWO has awarded over $50,000 in educational scholarships to twenty-six deserving student musicians. The Jack Stewart Music Changing Lives Scholarship Fund campaign will culminate each season with the annual scholarship benefit and awards presentation.
