Originally from Colorado Springs, Dr. Eric Hessel joined LSWO in 2016, shortly after beginning his doctoral studies in horn at the University of North Texas. Hessel currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Horn at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth and at Austin College in Sherman, also performing with the Sherman Symphony Orchestra. Prior to moving to Texas, he completed his Master’s in horn at the University of Kansas while performing with the Topeka Symphony as well as his Bachelor’s in composition at Arizona State University. As a composer, Hessel has seen his compositions performed across the United States as well as in Mexico, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. His wife, Dr. Mai Hessel, also performs as a percussionist with LSWO. The two of them frequently perform as the Spiral Staircase Duo and are excited to be raising an adorable 15-month-old son.

What do you love most about the horn?
I have always loved the horn for the wide range of emotions and roles that it can portray in every ensemble: from sweeping heroic themes to hauntingly beautiful melodies on the concert stage. I love the way it can stand out by itself or blend into any group of instruments.
Do you have a favorite experience playing with Lone Star?
I was thrown into LSWO for my very first concert as a featured soloist for Schumann’s Konzertstuck for four horns and ensemble, which is probably a dream piece to play for any hornist. Not only was I honored to be able to perform such a work, but I was immediately struck by the high level of playing surrounding me from every section of the ensemble. That integrity continues to inspire me whether we are playing new works, trusted classics, or every possible John Williams film score.
What do you like to do outside of playing music?
Outside of performing and teaching music, I enjoy composing both for commission and for fun. But when not immersed in music, I like cooking and improvising new recipes as well as hiking.

The Lone Star Wind Orchestra is comprised of professional wind, brass, and percussion musicians throughout North Texas and beyond. All players are equally essential to the success of the LSWO.
